About INTRESTEIN
Inventive Design. Absolute Physical Fidelity.
INTRESTEIN is an independent development studio and manufacturing atelier operating from Hiroshima, Japan. Founded by mechanical designer and inventor Michael D. Breitenstein, the studio delivers an uncompromising marriage of multi-disciplinary engineering and sculptural, museum-quality physical forms.
While the formal blueprint for the studio was codified in the early 2000s, the true foundations of INTRESTEIN span nearly four decades—originating in 1988 with a childhood defined by grit, resourcefulness, and a fascination with the natural world that began with selling hand-found agates on the street at just five years old. Today, that trajectory connects a childhood of raw necessity to a lifetime of formal mechanical design, rigorous self-taught engineering, and independent invention development.
We operate under a singular culture:
“True luxury is born from absolute geometric discipline.“
Whether engineering a singular, complex prototype or executing a low-volume product series, our work is defined by a refusal to accept shortcuts, prioritizing physical integrity above all else.
Embrasing both Form and Function.
With a background in Physics, Art, Music, Industrial/Architectual/Mechanical Design, and Entreprenuership, INTRESTEIN is where they all meet.
Our Studio Disciplines
Development
For elite collectors, galleries, and commercial partners requiring precise execution, we collaborate directly with clients to develop and elevate their concepts. Moving seamlessly from inventive consulting and multi-disciplinary design to hands-on physical manufacturing, we transform complex ideas and high-end presentation challenges into highly refined realities built to impress.
Engineered Series Production
Our scalable product lines—including our premier mineral display collections through PEANUTS MINERALS—are developed with the exact same architectural rigor as our one-off commissions. Produced in deliberate, low-volume studio runs, these pieces inherit the strict tolerances and meticulous finish of our custom lab work, offering elite quality at a scalable production standard.
Institutional Trust
Before stepping forward as an independent studio, the INTRESTEIN standard was forged in the background as the exclusive manufacturing backbone for premier collections. Our custom fabrications—engineered exclusively for PEANUTS MINERALS—have been featured by prominent Tokyo galleries including WAKO, showcased in national NHK television docudramas, and highlighted across multiple issues of Brutus magazine, including dedicated special editions. Today, our physical designs remain on permanent display within the private collections of prominent global art patrons throughout Japan.
Inherited Discipline: The Trajectory
Operating since 2015 in Japan, INTRESTEIN blends a deep-rooted German and Welsh heritage of industrious engineering with a local Japanese culture renowned for its meticulous devotion to craft.
The studio’s DNA is built on a lifelong history of bootstrapping, brutal restarts, and relentless self-education. We do not buy generic, off-the-shelf solutions; we engineer our own workarounds and custom processes from the ground up to achieve a level of precision the mainstream market cannot replicate.
- 1988–1995 | The Genesis: Rooted in raw resourcefulness, selling agates on the sidewalk on a makeshift table at five years old, evolving into a definitive focus on architectural and spatial design by 1995.
- 2002–2004 | Professional Foundations: Earning a Mechanical CAD degree and conceptualizing the original invention framework under the name “IDEA-Z” in 2003.
- 2004–2015 | Industrial Design Experience: Over a decade of rigorous professional experience at an engineering firm, mastering complex industrial workflows on Airport Conveyor Systems, Data Centers, and Headquarter buildings.
- 2008–2010 | Spatial Acoustics: Designing and building a custom EDM production studio, mapping out the mechanical and spatial needs of creators, and ultimately transitioning the space into a physical workshop to build new instruments.
- 2010–2015 | Deep Self-Education: Formally redefining the business name to INTRESTEIN in 2010. Initiating a five-year regimen of self-taught Mechanical Engineering and Pure & Applied Physics while building a compact prototyping lab directly inside an apartment.
- 2015–2021 | The Japanese Market Pivot: Relocating permanently to Japan in 2015. Spending six years dismantling, analyzing, and adapting the original business model to align perfectly with the demanding standards and unique logistics of the Japanese market.
- 2021–Present | Re-Acquisition & Scale: Initiating a complete operational reset in 2021 to focus entirely on high-demand sectors. Rebuilding the studio’s machinery arsenal from zero within a restricted footprint, refining precision custom manufacturing workflows, and launching our premier mineral display lines for PEANUTS MINERALS.
The Vision
We view our workshop not merely as a commercial production space, but as a center for technical discipline. Backed by a lifetime of practical execution, we remain dedicated to a foundational long-term vision: establishing an integrated ecosystem that combines a specialized technical academy and community maker space with localized real estate infrastructure. This initiative will serve as a launchpad for the next generation of builders—providing the physical space, housing stability, and rare multi-disciplinary fabrication tools required to help makers put their minds together, bypass the traditional gatekeepers, and turn successful ideas into reality.
Studio Access
We work exclusively with private-label brands, institutional partners, and discerning individuals who demand absolute promise.
